Watching students showcase their talents, whether it’s through singing, dancing, or any other skill, at school talent shows is always a delight. Each participant deserves applause for sharing their abilities with their peers, yet some performances stand out, displaying creativity that exceeds expectations for their age.
In 2017, a group of four fifth-graders from New Braunfels Christian Academy in Texas delivered a memorable act at their Elementary Talent Show. To keep their performance a surprise, the students began by hiding under a black cloth. When they revealed themselves, the audience was met with the amusing sight of the boys dressed as babies, complete with tiny prosthetic legs that they moved with their arms. This unexpected visual immediately brought laughter from the crowd, setting the perfect tone for what was to come.
The performance that followed was even more impressive, earning an enthusiastic response from the audience. The boys showcased their creativity and humor by dancing to a mix of popular songs while still in their baby outfits. They started with a lively pantomime to Taylor Swift’s hit “Shake It Off,” energizing the crowd from the start. The highlight of their act was their take on Carl Douglas’s “Kung Fu Fighting,” where they displayed mock martial arts moves, all while dressed in their playful costumes, to the cheers and applause of their peers.
This imaginative performance wasn’t an isolated instance of young talent captivating an audience. In 2014, a group of eight fifth-graders at Porter Elementary pulled off a similarly impressive act. They performed a synchronized swimming routine, complete with coordinated moves set to classical music, all while “swimming” on a blue plastic sheet that served as their makeshift pool. Their clever performance ended with roaring cheers and praise from the delighted audience.
These two acts, which together have garnered over 30 million views, are shining examples of the creativity and talent often on display at school talent shows. Keeping an audience entertained for even a few minutes is a challenging task, but these young performers managed it with ease
