Drooling while asleep can be bothersome, especially if it disrupts your sleep or if you share a bed with another person.

However, it can also have several beneficial effects, including assisting with digestion and cleaning our mouths.
The Cleveland Clinic notes that numerous neurological disorders can result in excessive drooling, such as stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), Down syndrome, and autism.
Is drooling a cause for concern?
Factors such as sleep position, dental issues, medications, and various illnesses can lead to drooling during sleep.
Nevertheless, among the various “sleep disturbances” that may cause drooling, it can also indicate that you are sleeping soundly, which consequently contributes to overall happiness.
What happens if chronic drooling isn’t treated?
Ongoing or severe drooling can lead to health issues.
For instance, too much saliva can cause angular cheilitis — painful cracks or sores at the corners of the mouth. In more serious cases, saliva can accidentally enter the lungs and lead to pneumonia. That’s why it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider as soon as you notice any persistent problems.
Indicators that your sleep is restful
Waking up occasionally with some drool on your pillow or nightshirt is not a cause for alarm. While it may be slightly embarrassing — and many individuals feel self-conscious about it — it is generally nothing to be concerned about.
In fact, it is quite common and can even signify that you have enjoyed a restful night’s sleep.
During the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase of our sleep, it is essential that this stage remains uninterrupted to allow us to enter deep, restorative sleep.
At this point, certain neurotransmitters are suppressed to prevent muscle movements that could lead us to react to whatever we are dreaming about. If drooling occurs, it may indicate that this phase has proceeded without interruption, suggesting that we have had a deep and restorative night’s sleep.
The Importance of Sleep for Happiness
According to an article in The Daily Mail, sleep is a crucial factor in achieving happiness. For instance, it has been shown that adequate sleep can enhance happiness levels more significantly than a fourfold increase in our salary! A study conducted by the U.K. grocery chain Sainsbury’s identified sleep as the most significant predictor of well-being.
Therefore, there is no need to feel embarrassed or worried if you drool a bit during your sleep — it is entirely normal.
However, if you find that you are drooling excessively at night or developing small sores around your mouth, it may be wise to consult your doctor.
