Tensions were running high.
In a historic landslide, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani has been chosen as New York City’s next mayor, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani gathered over 1.03 million votes, which is more than the total votes of all his opponents combined. His win is a significant milestone: Mamdani is now the city’s first Muslim mayor and the first mayor of South Asian descent.
Even before the election, there was a lot of tension between left-leaning Zohran Mamdani and President Trump, who has strong personal connections to New York City.
In June of this year, Trump spoke with Fox News and claimed that Mamdani’s victory was “inconceivable” because he viewed him as “a pure communist.” Before the election, Trump posted on Truth Social, warning that he would cut federal funding to the city if Mamdani, whom he again called a “communist,” won.
“Whether you like Andrew Cuomo or not, you have to vote for him and hope he does a great job. He can do it, but Mamdani can’t!” Trump stated.
He also mentioned, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, I will probably not be giving Federal Funds, except for the bare minimum required, to my beloved first home.”

Now that the election is finished, the city’s Board of Elections has reported the highest voter turnout in over 50 years, with more than two million New Yorkers voting.
In his victory speech on November 4, Mamdani targeted Trump, saying:
“New York will stay a city of immigrants, a city created by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” he stated, adding: “If anyone can teach a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to beat him, it is the city that brought him to life.”
But he didn’t stop there.
Without wasting any time, Mamdani called out President Donald Trump, hinting at the tough political fights that are coming. In front of a loud crowd, he shot four sharp words directly at the former president:
“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!”
Trump’s spooky reply
President Trump, who had been very vocal about who he wanted as the next mayor of New York, was not happy with the results—or with Mamdani’s victory speech, which he surely heard. After the election, Trump went on Truth Social to share a very creepy message:
“…AND SO IT BEGINS!”
This mysterious post has caused a lot of people to wonder what it means. Since Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” before and threatened to cut federal funding to New York City if Mamdani won, many think that financial pressure could be his first move against the new mayor.
Trump has also warned about possible arrest or deportation if Mamdani takes office, making some people think his Truth Social message might suggest that such extreme actions could happen.
Whether Trump’s scary words are just talk or a sign of real political fights coming, one thing is for sure: Mamdani’s historic win has set the stage for a battle that could change New York politics—and maybe even the whole country.
